Personal Website Redesign for 2017

It wouldn't be a new year without a complete redesign of my personal website. While I have some major plans in the works for Di Franco University, and eventually a website solely focused on my Patreon campaign, I figured I could use some inspiration by redesigning this very website. And besides, it's nice to mix things up once in a while.

So, what exactly has changed? Well, to put simply, everything. This new design, I feel, best represents me as a person and the work that I do. Let's break it down.

Completely New Look

The most obvious change to my personal website is its overall design. I've decided to use a vertical side navigation, allowing for more focus on the site's main content. Going this route has also enabled me to be more creative with how I choose to display content in a grid-like fashion. A great example is my Videos page. The content layout is clean, minimal and easy to understand.

Did you notice something else that was new? The homepage for http://daviddifran.co is now a cover page, thanks to Squarespace! At first I wasn't sure about going this route, but I am so glad I did. Not only does the homepage feel quite inviting, but it also displays a video background — a first-ever for this website. Also featured is a simple bio about myself.

Quick Access to Social Media

One major advantage of going with a side navigation is the ability to treat it like a sidebar. In other words, Squarespace allows me to add any form of content I want to it. In my case, featuring links to my social media profiles is a nice way of further engaging with anyone who is interested in learning more about me.

Website visitors can also see my most recent tweets by going to the Contact page. If someone is looking to get in touch with me, why not provide them with a quick preview of what I'm currently talking about? Boom! Engagement.

Different Focus on Photography

A well-known fact in the photography world is that it doesn't matter what gear you use. Instead, it's important to focus on getting the right shot, regardless of what you decide to use. And I agree with this statement.

But you know what? I'm going to look at this situation a bit differently. While the gear doesn't necessarily matter, I still find it interesting to know what was used to get a specific photo. This especially applies to the differences in cameras on iOS devices and Android phones. I've always found it fun to compare the two mobile platforms in that regard.

Going to my Photos page, you'll see that I have broken down my photography portfolio by devices used. I feel this is a great way of expressing the different ways I choose to shoot, as well as edit, my work.

Tools and Resources

Like my previous website design, the new layout contains information on all the tools and resources that I use to power my content. From affordable web hosting to affiliate marketing platforms, this is the page to go to if you're interested in doing what I do. And because everything is now featured in a grid-like fashion, this makes it easier to take it all in without having to scroll down the page.

Exciting Changes to Patreon

Let's face it. The old Patreon page on my website was becoming a bit much. Since the beginning of my campaign, it has always featured the names and/or links of hundreds of patrons who pledge at least $5 per month. While this was a great idea that seemed to take off overnight, it eventually turned into what felt like an endless list of names. So, in an effort to resolve this issue, I've decided to put the list on hold.

Firstly, let's make it clear that the original list of $5+ patrons is still live. It always will be. The list has simply been moved to its own legacy page, which can be viewed here. However, doing this has allowed me to introduce a brand new list, one that is exclusive to $10+ patrons.

As of today, patrons who pledge at least $10/month now have the opportunity to list any link of their choice in what I like to call the Patrons Showcase. This can be a great chance to gain additional YouTube subscribers, Twitter followers, etc. If you have a link, then let the world see it.

Note: While future $5 patrons are no longer able to list their names on this website, this does not affect your other perks in any way. You still have full access to the exclusive vlogs, private Facebook group, etc.

Well, I suppose that's all I have to cover for now. I'm going to leave it up to you to explore the rest of my website. Be sure to stop by the About page, which was designed from the ground up.

Of course, additional changes to this new layout will be rolled out over time. I encourage you to contact me with any feedback that comes to mind. Feel free to send me a message here.
